Government-backed multimillion hydrogen engine initiative launches in WestTech London

Brunel University of London, one of the UK’s foremost technical universities, has received government backing to develop ultra-efficient and affordable zero-carbon engines powered by hydrogen. The initiative is supported by an initial £1.3 million award from the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)’s Prosperity Partnerships scheme, matched by industry investment from partners including engine specialists Advanced Innovative Engineering Ltd and MAHLE Powertrain Ltd.

The three-year initiative will design hydrogen rotary and piston engines – addressing the decarbonisation challenges that the heavy-duty trucks, marine vessels, aircraft, and machinery sectors face. Located at Brunel’s campus in Uxbridge, in the heart of WestTech London, the project draws on our strengths in advanced manufacturing, transport innovation, and frontier science.
